Meatballs in Tomato Stew (Izmir Köfte)

Ingredients

  • 800 g Canned tomatoes
  • 500 g Ground beef
  • 1/2 Onion
  • 1 clove Garlic
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • a pinch Pepper
  • 1/2 tsp Allspice
  • 1 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil
  • 3 Potatoes
  • 2 Bell peppers
  • 1/4 tsp Salt (for finishing)
  • a pinch Pepper (for finishing)
  • 1 tsp Honey
  • Plenty Love

Instructions

  • Finely chop onion and garlic. Mix well with ground beef, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, allspice, cumin powder.
  • Divide mixture into 24 equal portions. Brown in olive oil.
  • Cut potatoes into quarters and steam. Cut bell peppers lengthwise into 8 pieces.
  • Add the canned tomatoes to step 2, then add the potatoes from step 3 and warm through.
  • Add honey and love to step 4. Taste and add finishing salt and pepper.

Notes

These are savory meatballs with a kick of spice. In Turkey, they’re often made with lamb or beef.
